Since 1953, more than 60 vocalists have performed as part of the group, including icons such as Clyde McPhatter, Ben E King, Rudy Lewis and Johnny Moore. During this time, the only constant has been the Treadwell family, who founded the group back in 1953 and who still own the group to this day.
The current line up is proud and honoured to be the latest chapter in the Treadwell dynasty and uphold the musical and performance values instilled by George Treadwell.
It has been another incredible year for The Drifters, who have just finished a UK arena tour along with The Temptations, The Four Tops and The Three Degrees, which culminated at London’s O2 arena last month. The tour followed an historic event in London in 2009, which featured The Drifters Legends - some of the best loved former members of the line up and a new album release on the Atlantic label.
Current Drifters line up member, Michael Williams, says he is very much looking forward to the UK tour: “There is something very special about the audiences that come to our shows. We often get several generations of the same family coming to the shows and we are now getting a lot of new fans to the shows. Everyone just wants to get out of their seats and dance from the start and we all have a great time.”
“For this tour, we will of course be performing some of the classic hits, in particular those from the ‘Bell Arista’ years and we have some surprises in store in the form of some lesser known and previously unreleased tracks as well as the new material from the current album and the new single, which we are very excited about.”
The Drifters current album Five Decades and Moore has been released and the new single entitled ‘Do You Dream Of Me’ released on Neon Records is available now. Do You Dream Of Me features Michael Williams on lead vocal and is produced by Shaun Lowe (Prince, Big Country, Sting). A new ‘Live in London’ DVD is also available.
